Removing backing material during gyratory crusher maintenance
A Columbia Steel customer asks:
We are using zinc backing and we want to remount a worn mantle. Can we heat up the mantle in an oven to melt the zinc backing out?
Answered by Doug Henderson, Product Engineering Manager, Gyratory Crusher Group:
“No, that would probably not be feasible. Most manganese steel compositions that mantles are made out of should generally not be heated above 500°F. Pure Zinc melts at 787.2°F. I am not aware of a feasible way to heat the zinc to the melting point without over heating the manganese mantle.”
Thanks for your question!
